BOSTON — A Boston police officer was shot in the arm early Friday morning while pursuing a suspect who fled during an investigation of suspicious activity in a Roxbury park.

The shooting occurred at approximately 12:46 a.m. in General Edward O. Gourdin African American Veterans Memorial Park, according to the Boston Police Department.

Four officers from District B-2 were monitoring a group loitering in the park when they observed one individual standing apart from the group.

As officers approached, the suspect, later identified as 31-year-old Daiquan Rice, fled on foot.

Rice ran from Washington Street onto Archer Terrace before turning toward Kenilworth Street.

During the pursuit, Rice discharged a firearm, striking an officer in the arm.

Officers returned fire, striking Rice and taking him into custody near 6 Kenilworth Street.

A loaded firearm with an extended magazine capable of holding more than ten rounds was recovered from Rice.

Both the injured officer and Rice were transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

During a search, officers recovered two plastic bags containing a white, rock-like substance that had fallen from Rice’s pocket.

Three additional officers also suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were treated at area hospitals.

Rice remains under arrest at a local hospital and will be arraigned in Roxbury District Court on charges including attempted murder, possession of Class B drugs, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without an FID card, possession of a large-capacity firearm, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building.
