FALMOUTH — An 18-year-old Falmouth man has been arrested and charged with making threats about conducting a school shooting, Cape & Islands District Attorney Robert J. Galibois and Falmouth Police Chief Jeff Lourie announced.
Ian Fotheringham was arraigned Friday on a charge of threatened use of a deadly weapon in a public building.
In August, Falmouth police received information that Fotheringham allegedly indicated he wanted to shoot up a school and was refurbishing firearms in his room.
Police conducted a consensual search of his residence but found no illegal firearms.
In early September, school safety monitors for Falmouth School District reported a suspicious male walking in woods behind a Falmouth school.
The monitors were concerned the individual was “casing” the school, and police later identified him as Fotheringham.
Investigation revealed Fotheringham’s phone contained photos of the Columbine High School shooting.
A search warrant executed at Fotheringham’s home led to the recovery of a large 3D printer capable of producing firearms.
Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office and Falmouth police arrested Fotheringham at 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
The court detained Fotheringham until Tuesday for a hearing on the Commonwealth’s motion to hold him as a danger to the community.
The case is being investigated by Massachusetts State Police detectives and Falmouth police.
