NICHOLS — Two people died when a tractor-trailer rear-ended their passenger car on State Route 17 east shortly after 4:30 a.m. Sept. 8.
New York State Police at Owego were dispatched by the Tioga County 911 Center to the crash in the town of Nichols.
The deceased were identified as Frank J. Dempaire, 45, of Reading, Pennsylvania, and Elize Carlos, 45, of Newark, New Jersey.
Both vehicles were traveling east on State Route 17 when the tractor-trailer struck the passenger car from behind.
The tractor-trailer operator was not injured.
The crash occurred between exit 61 (Barton) and exit 62 (Nichols).
All eastbound traffic was diverted but State Route 17 has since reopened.
The investigation continues.
