CLARKSTOWN — A Virginia Department of Corrections employee was charged with weapon possession after state troopers found two loaded firearms in his vehicle during a welfare check on Interstate 87.
Montana Madison, 34, of Virginia, was parked on the shoulder of southbound I-87 at Exit 13N when troopers from SP Tarrytown approached his black 1996 GMC pickup truck at approximately 12:03 a.m. Sept. 6.
During the welfare check, a trooper observed a loaded Kel-Tec .22 caliber semiautomatic handgun in plain view on the front passenger seat.
Madison was detained and during further questioning admitted to having a loaded Ruger .44 magnum revolver in the rear passenger seat area.
Both firearms were secured as evidence and Madison was taken into custody without incident.
Madison, who has no prior criminal history, told troopers he was traveling from Virginia to Maine for a hunting trip.
He was transported to SP Tarrytown and charged with two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree.
Madison was released with an appearance ticket returnable to Clarkstown Town Court on Sept. 20 at 1:30 p.m.
