SPRINGFIELD — Two suspects were arrested Monday morning after a stolen vehicle rammed multiple police cruisers during an attempted arrest on Forest Street.
Springfield Police Officers and Detectives arrested the suspects on the 0-100 block of Forest Street at approximately 10:05 a.m. in connection with a stolen motor vehicle that crashed into two police cruisers and a parked car.
Around 9:40 a.m., a Springfield Police Detective assigned to the Auto-Theft Unit located a stolen Hyundai in the area of Dickinson Street and Beaumont Street.
The vehicle was reported stolen out of Enfield, Connecticut.
As the Detective approached the vehicle, he could see that the ignition column had been ripped out and that two people were in the car.
The occupants appeared to be sleeping.
Assisting officers arrived and attempted to wake up the suspects.
The driver, later identified as Awad Anter, refused to open the door and placed the vehicle into reverse striking a cruiser as several officers were attempting to open the vehicle’s doors.
The driver drove forward, striking another cruiser before reversing, nearly hitting several officers.
The driver then drove across Beaumont Street and struck an unoccupied parked car in a driveway before speeding away.
A short time later, the vehicle was located unoccupied on the 100 block of Garfield Street.
Detectives and Officers observed the two suspects jumping a fence on Fairfield Street towards Forest Street.
The two suspects, Anter and his passenger, a 17-year-old male, were taken into custody on Forest Street.
19-year-old Awad Anter of Springfield is charged with Receiving a Stolen Motor Vehicle, Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Crash, Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License, and Assault by Means of a Dangerous Weapon (Six Counts).
The name, booking photo and charges of the juvenile involved will not be released due to his age.
