Haverstraw man arrested on weapons charges after foot chase

HAVERSTRAW — A 19-year-old man was arrested Tuesday evening after allegedly discarding a loaded firearm during a foot chase with police in the downtown business district.

Miciaih Cozart of Haverstraw was spotted by police personnel at approximately 8 p.m. Sept. 2.

Cozart was known to have multiple active warrants for his arrest, according to the Haverstraw Police Department.

When officers attempted to stop him on the sidewalk, Cozart fled on foot.

During the ensuing foot pursuit, Cozart attempted to discard a loaded firearm into a park on Main Street, police said.

He was apprehended by Haverstraw Police personnel and taken into custody.

The firearm was recovered by officers.

Cozart was transported to the Haverstraw Police Department for arrest processing.

He was later arraigned in the Village of Haverstraw Justice Court, where he was remanded to the Rockland County Correctional Facility in lieu of $25,000 cash bail, $100,000 bond or partially secured bond.

In addition to his warrants, Cozart was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, criminal possession of a firearm, criminal possession of stolen property and resisting arrest.

The criminal possession of a weapon charge is a Class C felony, while the firearm possession and stolen property charges are Class E felonies.

The resisting arrest charge is a Class A misdemeanor.
