Venice man arrested in Moravia on vehicle theft, forgery charges

MORAVIA — A 41-year-old Venice man was arrested Aug. 30 on charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and possession of a forged instrument, according to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.

Benjerman J. Denman was taken into custody at 7:59 p.m. on charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in the third degree, a misdemeanor, and possession of a forged instrument in the second degree, a felony.

Deputies were dispatched Aug. 26 at 11:28 a.m. to a residence in Venice for a larceny complaint.

The victim told deputies that Denman had taken their vehicle without permission.

The victim also reported receiving a call from a bank in Moravia indicating Denman had attempted to cash checks that were not authorized.

Investigation revealed that Denman had used the victim’s car without permission and possessed forged checks at a bank in the Village of Moravia.

Deputies filed for a warrant charging Denman with criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree and unauthorized use of a vehicle in the third degree.

Denman was brought to centralized arraignment and released pending a future court date.

He is scheduled to appear in Town of Venice Court on Sept. 15 at 6:00 p.m.
