HIGHLAND — A 27-year-old homeless man was arrested Sept. 2 after allegedly using a fallen tree to block a roadway and carjack a woman at gunpoint.

Carlos D. Diaz was charged with first-degree robbery, second-degree grand larceny and second-degree menacing, according to Town of Lloyd Police.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., a Highland woman was driving on Oak Crest Drive when Diaz deliberately blocked the roadway with a fallen tree, forcing her to stop, police said.

Diaz approached the vehicle and threatened to use a firearm, forced the woman out and stole the vehicle, police said.

He fled the area in the stolen vehicle.

About 30 minutes later, the vehicle was spotted in the City of Kingston and Town of Ulster area.

Police attempted to stop Diaz, but he failed to comply and was finally stopped near Ulster Avenue and Route 9W in the Town of Ulster.

Diaz was taken into custody and transported to Town of Lloyd Police.

He was arraigned before Town of Lloyd Judge Rizzo and remanded to Ulster County Jail on $50,000 cash bail.

Diaz is scheduled to return to Town of Lloyd Court on Sept. 5.

Lloyd Police were assisted by Town of Ulster Police, New York State Police, Ulster County Sheriff’s Department, City of Kingston Police and Ulster County District Attorney’s Office.
