HURLEY — A two-vehicle collision on State Route 209 in Hurley resulted in the death of a Middletown woman and left three others injured on the evening of Sept. 1.
New York State Police said troopers from the Kingston barracks responded to the crash at approximately 5:32 p.m.
A preliminary investigation determined that Hawanatu I. Deen-Ayers, 47, of Middletown, was operating a 2019 Mercedes-Benz southbound on Route 209.
Deen-Ayers attempted to pass another vehicle by crossing over the broken yellow centerline into the northbound lane, police said.
At the same time, a 2021 Ford pickup driven by David W. Lincoln, 60, of Accord, was heading northbound on the same route.
To avoid a collision, Lincoln maneuvered his vehicle onto the eastern shoulder, according to police.
The Mercedes-Benz also entered the eastern shoulder, where it struck the Ford pickup head-on.
All occupants were able to exit their vehicles except for Sierra Fatima Koren Thornton, 25, of Middletown, who was trapped inside the Mercedes-Benz.
Thornton was extricated by emergency personnel and transported to Kingston Health Alliance Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
Deen-Ayers, Lincoln, and a 63-year-old female passenger from the Ford pickup were taken to Benedictine Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
