Bridport crash sends 2 to hospital

BRIDPORT — A 19-year-old driver fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a tree on Vermont Route 22A near Hemenway Road on Aug. 31 at approximately 8:14 a.m.

Jasper Sylvester of Fairfield was driving north when he failed to maintain his lane of travel, causing his 2025 Honda HR-V to run off the road to the right and strike a tree.

The vehicle rolled over after striking the tree.

Sylvester’s passenger, Rebecca Hunter, 20, of Anthony, Kansas, sustained minor injuries in the crash.

Both Sylvester and Hunter were transported to Porter Medical Center by Middlebury EMS for treatment of minor injuries.

Sylvester was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The Honda was totaled in the accident.

Road conditions were dry and weather was clear at the time of the crash.

Sylvester was issued a Vermont Civil Violation Complaint for operating without a learner’s permit and driving on roadways laned for traffic.

Bridport Fire Department and Middlebury EMS assisted at the scene.

The crash was investigated by troopers from the New Haven Barracks.
