BOSTON — Two suspects were arrested Saturday after an assault with a firearm led to a chase through Dorchester that ended with the recovery of a loaded handgun.

Ricardo Mendes, 18, of Dorchester, and a 15-year-old juvenile male were taken into custody on firearm charges and violation of auto laws, Boston Police said.

Officers assigned to District B-3 were patrolling the area of Blue Hill Avenue and Harvard Street at about 4:51 p.m. when they were approached by a victim who reported being assaulted with a firearm.

The suspect fled on a bicycle as officers exited their cruiser to approach him, heading toward Harambe Park.

During the chase, the suspect got off the bike and onto the back of a dirt bike operated by the juvenile.

The suspects initially escaped, and a description was broadcast to other officers.

The dirt bike was later observed traveling at a high rate of speed on the sidewalk of Harvard Street toward Blue Hill Avenue.

The suspects nearly struck an officer during their flight, though the officer was not injured.

Officers cornered the suspects behind 883 Blue Hill Avenue, blocking them from both sides.

A foot pursuit followed, but both suspects were quickly apprehended.

During a search incident to arrest, officers recovered a Smith and Wesson M&P Shield with seven rounds in the magazine from the juvenile’s fanny pack.

Mendes faces charges including carry a firearm without a license, carry a loaded firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without an FID card and two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon.

The juvenile faces charges including unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, reckless operation of a motor vehicle and assault and battery on a police officer.

Both suspects are expected to be arraigned in district court.
