Police car struck while responding to crash on Niagara Falls Boulevard

TONAWANDA — A Town of Tonawanda police patrol car was struck by another vehicle while officers were responding to a single-vehicle crash on Niagara Falls Boulevard near Interstate 290 East on Friday night.

The initial crash occurred at approximately 11:35 p.m. Aug. 30 when a 2014 Subaru Impreza carrying three people struck a concrete barrier after traveling at a high rate of speed, according to police.

The Subaru was driven by 19-year-old Michael C. Gillis Jr. of Orchard Park.

A 19-year-old female occupied the front passenger seat and a juvenile was in the back seat.

All three occupants received medical attention at the scene.

Gillis and the front seat passenger were transported by ambulance to Erie County Medical Center for sustained injuries.

The juvenile sustained minor injuries and was transported to ECMC by family.

While officers were on scene investigating the crash, a marked Town of Tonawanda Police Department patrol vehicle occupied by Officer Mark Starich was struck by an uninvolved vehicle.

Officer Starich was not injured in the collision.

The striking vehicle was a 2015 Kia Optima operated by 31-year-old Michael G. Gibbs of Ransomville.

Gibbs reported no injury.

The sole passenger in the Kia sustained a minor leg injury and did not require hospital transport.

Both motor vehicle accidents are under investigation.
