NAUGATUCK — Two Walmart employees were arrested after a confrontation with customers escalated into a physical assault on Aug. 27.
Police were called to the Walmart at 1100 New Haven Road at approximately 7 p.m. for reports of several people fighting.
Officers learned that two customers, one handicapped and using an electric scooter, were shopping for clothing and requested assistance from employee Shelly Alam, 45, of Waterbury.
Alam responded in a manner that led to a verbal altercation between her and the customer.
Alam also began to ridicule the customer’s handicap, according to police.
When the customer requested to speak with the store manager, another employee, Robert Mclaughlin, 39, of Waterbury, approached the customer and punched them in the head, causing minor injury.
Alam was charged with conspiracy to commit assault in the third degree, risk of injury to a child, and interfering with an officer/resisting arrest.
She was released on $5,000 surety bond and is scheduled to appear in Waterbury Superior Court on Sept. 24.
Mclaughlin was charged with assault in the third degree, risk of injury to a child, and interfering with an officer/resisting arrest.
