CHENANGO — New York State Police at Binghamton and the Broome County Sheriff’s Department responded to a residential fire at a home on Broad Street on Aug. 25 at approximately 12:47 p.m.

When law enforcement arrived on scene, the 26-year-old female resident had been able to get herself and two children, ages 5 and 2, out of the home, but was unable to get to a 1-year-old due to the heavy thick smoke.

Working together, troopers and sheriff’s deputies were able to get in through a window and get the 1-year-old out of the home.

The child was transported to Upstate Medical Center and has died from injuries sustained in the fire.

Troopers are working with Broome County Fire Investigators to determine the cause of the fire.
