EAST LONGMEADOW — East Longmeadow police arrested a mail carrier Tuesday after he allegedly struck a pedestrian and fled the scene before crashing into a bank building.

Robert O’Sullivan, 54, of Westfield, was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol while causing serious bodily injury and other related offenses.

The incident began at 9:39 a.m. when Westcomm Regional Dispatch received multiple 911 calls reporting a crash involving a U.S. Postal Service mail truck and a pedestrian near gas pumps at the Pride gas station at the center rotary.

Callers reported the mail truck driver left the scene heading north on Elm Street and that the injured pedestrian was by one of the gas pumps.

East Longmeadow officers arrived and began administering first aid to the injured person, who had serious injuries.

Multiple eyewitnesses told officers the mail truck operator hit the person near the gas pump as well as multiple other vehicles, and narrowly missed striking witnesses and employees while fleeing.

Shortly after, Peoples Bank at 201 North Main Street reported a mail truck had crashed into their building.

Officers responded to the bank and located the mail truck driver, confirmed to be a postal service employee.

After investigation, officers determined the mail truck operator was the same person who struck the pedestrian at the Pride station.

East Longmeadow Police detectives and Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Hampden County District Attorney’s Office are continuing the investigation.

O’Sullivan is expected to be arraigned in Palmer District Court.

The Longmeadow Fire Department ambulance transported the injured pedestrian to Baystate Medical Center.

The person is in serious but stable condition.
