Lisbon man charged with aggravated assault in Topsham parking lot crash

TOPSHAM — A 46-year-old Lisbon man was arrested after allegedly striking a pedestrian with his vehicle in a Market Basket parking lot on Aug. 24.

Jeremy Hunter of Booker Street was charged with aggravated assault, reckless conduct and driving to endanger following the 2:40 p.m. incident.

The victim, Althea Kennedy-Ecker, 72, of Lisbon, was found lying in a crosswalk with numerous injuries.

She was transported by Topsham Fire and Rescue to Maine Medical Center in Portland with serious injuries.

Witnesses described the vehicle as a Mazda CX-5 and provided its registration plate number.

One witness reported seeing the vehicle accelerate through the parking lot once before returning to its original position and then accelerating again to strike the woman.

The victim’s son, who was also nearly struck, said the vehicle had accelerated before hitting his mother and leaving the scene.

Market Basket employees reported the vehicle had accelerated through the lot minutes before the crash and nearly struck an employee pushing shopping carts.

The Brunswick Police Department stopped the suspect vehicle on Route 1 in Brunswick.

Topsham officers confirmed damage on the vehicle consistent with witness reports.

Brunswick police had also taken a report of a hit and run crash occurring prior to the Topsham incident.

Hunter was transported to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset where he is being held on $50,000 cash bail.

He has an initial court date of Oct. 7.
