CAVENDISH — Vermont State Police arrested a 75-year-old Proctorsville man on DUI charges following a two-vehicle crash that seriously injured another driver Friday evening.

Rene Russell Melanson was driving a 2019 Ford F-250 on Vermont Route 103 near Greven Road when the crash occurred at 6:41 p.m. Aug. 22.

The second vehicle involved was a 1984 Chevrolet S10 pickup driven by Joseph Gifford, 56, of Chester.

Troopers from the Westminster Barracks responded to the crash scene under clear weather conditions on dry roads.

Investigation revealed Melanson had operated his vehicle in a negligent manner, according to police.

Melanson displayed signs of impairment while speaking with troopers, police said.

Gifford, who was not wearing a seatbelt, sustained suspected serious bodily injuries and was transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

Melanson’s vehicle sustained minor damage while Gifford’s pickup was totaled.

Melanson was arrested on suspicion of DUI and gross negligent operation and transported to the Westminster Barracks for processing.

He was issued a citation to appear in Windsor County Superior Court to answer the charges.
