Rochester man charged with weapon possession after traffic stop

ROCHESTER — Members of the New York State Police were assigned to a traffic detail on Clinton Avenue on Aug. 17.

At approximately 10 p.m., troopers stopped a gray Honda sedan for multiple Vehicle and Traffic Law violations.

The driver and sole occupant, Kemuel Ovidio Garcia Alvarez, age 27, of Rochester, was found to be unlicensed.

During an inventory of the vehicle, troopers located a loaded Taurus 9mm handgun with a high-capacity magazine.

An additional extended magazine was also recovered nearby.

Further investigation revealed the firearm had been reported stolen.

Alvarez was transported to SP Rochester and processed without incident.

He was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd (C Felony), three counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd (D Felony), Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 4th (Firearm) (E Felony), Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 1st (E Felony) and multiple Vehicle and Traffic Law violations.

Alvarez was remanded to the Monroe County Jail to await arraignment.
