HERKIMER — A 52-year-old homeless man has been charged with attempted murder and other felonies in connection with a shooting on North Main Street, police said Friday.
Craig Turner faces multiple charges including attempted murder in the second degree, first-degree assault with a firearm, and criminal use of a firearm in the first degree, all B-felonies, according to the Herkimer Police Department.
Turner also was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon involving a loaded firearm, a C-felony, and two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon involving large capacity magazines, D-felonies.
Additional charges include four counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, D-felonies, and two counts of second-degree menacing with a weapon, A-misdemeanors.
The shooting occurred Thursday at approximately 10:40 p.m. in the area of Burger King, with the incident taking place on the 100 block of North Main Street, police said.
Officers responding to the scene found one man on the ground in front of a vehicle and another man standing near the vehicle who had been shot.
A handgun was located at the scene and secured by police.
A bystander in a vehicle witnessed the shooting and used his vehicle to neutralize the shooter, likely preventing further shots from being fired at the victim and several patrons seated in front of the Endzone Pub, police said.
Both Turner and the victim were taken to Wynn Hospital for medical treatment and remain in stable condition.
The incident began near the bus stop on Albany Street at the intersection of North Main Street, according to the investigation.
Police enlisted the assistance of a crisis intervention worker to help those who witnessed the shooting.
