YONKERS — A 28-year-old Yonkers man has been charged with murder in connection with an overnight shooting that left a 41-year-old man dead.

Xavier Palmer was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both felonies, according to the Yonkers Police Department.

Police responded to the area of 30 Cliff Street just before 12:30 a.m. Aug. 11 on a report of a male who had been shot.

Officers found 41-year-old James Hardy of Yonkers with a gunshot wound to his chest.

Hardy was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Detectives from the Yonkers Police Major Case Squad and Crime Scene Unit processed the scene and investigated.

The investigation revealed the shooting was a targeted incident stemming from a dispute between Palmer and Hardy.

While engaged in an argument on the sidewalk, Palmer discharged a firearm at Hardy, striking him in the chest before fleeing the scene, police said.

Palmer was arrested by detectives earlier in the day.

“Great work by our Detectives in identifying and apprehending the shooter in this case within just 12 hours of the incident,” Police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza said.

“We will not tolerate senseless violence on our streets. If you commit these acts here, you will be apprehended and delivered to the justice system.”

The case is being prosecuted by the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office.
