Elmira man arrested after gunfire report, police chase

ELMIRA — Police arrested a 19-year-old man following a report of gunshots and a vehicle pursuit late Thursday.

Officers responded to the area of W. Gray St. and Guinnip Ave. around 10:42 p.m. after reports of multiple gunshots and two vehicles fleeing the scene.

A responding officer located a vehicle nearby and attempted a traffic stop.

The driver failed to stop, leading to a brief pursuit before the suspect fled on foot and was detained.

Police recovered several spent shell casings and a loaded 9mm handgun at the scene.

Christopher J. Brumfield of Elmira was arrested and charged with one count of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, a class C felony, along with multiple traffic violations.

No injuries were reported.

The Elmira Police Department was assisted by the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, West Elmira Police Department, Elmira Heights Police Department, New York State Police, and the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office.
