BOSTON — Officers arrested a 37-year-old man Wednesday in connection with a hammer attack in East Boston earlier this week.

Eric Vargas of East Boston was taken into custody on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

The arrest followed an incident reported at about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.

A victim told police he was entering a bakery at 40 Maverick Square when an unknown man asked to use his cellphone.

After the victim said he did not have one, he entered the bakery.

Upon leaving, the suspect allegedly struck him in the head with a hammer.

The victim suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a nearby health center.

Detectives obtained and circulated images of the suspect, leading to Vargas’ identification.

Officers found Vargas sitting on the steps of a building on Paris Street at about 5:16 p.m. Wednesday and arrested him after further investigation.

He is expected to be arraigned in East Boston District Court on one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
