Meriden man arrested after threatening judicial marshals, fleeing Waterbury courthouse

WATERBURY — A Meriden man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly threatening judicial marshals and fleeing the Waterbury Superior Court with a firearm.

At approximately 11 a.m., Troop A – Southbury personnel responded to a disturbance at 400 Grand Street involving threats made to court staff.

The suspect, later identified as Jose Torrez, 30, fled on foot but was apprehended by Waterbury police.

Officers found a live 9mm bullet in a satchel Torrez was carrying and later recovered a loaded 9mm pistol nearby.

Judicial marshals reported Torrez set off the metal detector, refused to comply with security, and threatened to return with “something” for them.

Torrez, who was wearing a black face mask upon re-entering the courthouse, was stopped by marshals before fleeing.

Police confirmed Torrez was a convicted felon and ineligible to possess a firearm.

He also had two active arrest warrants from Troop I – Bethany and Watertown police.

Torrez was charged with illegal weapon possession, interfering with an officer, breach of peace, criminal possession of a firearm, and first-degree threatening.

He was additionally charged with second-degree threatening and breach of peace related to the outstanding warrants.

Torrez was held on a $2 million bond and is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
