Utica man charged with grand larceny after backpack theft

UTICA — Police arrested a 29-year-old man in connection with the theft of a backpack containing a credit card and other property.

Officers responded to the 400 block of Columbia Street at approximately 10:45 p.m. Aug. 5 regarding a grand larceny investigation.

Police obtained identifying information and surveillance footage after learning an individual had stolen the backpack.

Officers later found the suspect sleeping on a bench in the 200 block of Bleecker Street.

The suspect was still in possession of some of the stolen property when located.

Both the suspect and the recovered property were brought to the Utica Police Department.

Rockim Thomas, 29, of Herkimer, was charged with grand larceny in the fourth degree and criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree.
