TRUMBULL — The Trumbull Police Department is working to identify and apprehend those responsible for recent car thefts and break-ins, officials said Monday.
Police have recovered one stolen vehicle and are working to recover others taken from homes, according to a statement from Chief Michael Lombardo.
The department is asking residents to lock vehicle doors and remove keys, key fobs and valuables from cars.
Residents should also remove garage remote controls from vehicles, police said.
Officials are urging the public to report suspicious activity immediately.
Police have added additional patrols 24 hours a day and are using detectives and other agencies to assist in the investigation.
The crimes are occurring in many area towns throughout the state, according to the statement.
Despite recent incidents, car break-ins during the first six months of this year dropped 34% compared to the same period in 2024, police said.
Since 2020, Trumbull has seen a 54% reduction in vehicle break-ins when compared to 2024, according to the department.
Law enforcement cannot pursue vehicles that fail to stop, but other methods have successfully led to apprehensions, officials said.
Chief Lombardo said he communicates regularly with First Selectman Vicki Tesoro about public safety concerns and strategies.
