HYANNIS — A 28-year-old Hyannis man was sentenced to 14 and a half to 16 years in state prison after being convicted of multiple sexual assault charges following a jury trial in Barnstable Superior Court.
Furkan Ergen was found guilty June 30 on three counts of rape and two counts of indecent assault and battery on a person over the age of 14.
On July 23, 2024, Barnstable Police received a call from a woman stating she had been assaulted inside an apartment.
Officers were dispatched to an area in Hyannis to meet with the woman.
The woman reported she had been out with Ergen earlier that evening when he brought her to his apartment where he forced himself on her and sexually assault her.
The victim escaped from the apartment, hid outside, ran through nearby woods, and contacted police that night.
Several members of the Barnstable Police Detectives Unit participated in the investigation with Det. Catarina Parache serving as the lead investigator.
The jury returned guilty verdicts on all charges after a six-day trial.
Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Isaacs, Chief of the Domestic Violence Unit, prosecuted the case along with Victim Witness Assistant Caitlin Carroll.
Cape & Islands District Attorney Robert J. Galibois said the verdict holds the defendant accountable for his actions and reinforces the importance of supporting survivors of assault.
Superior Court Associate Justice Michael Cahillane imposed the sentence with a probationary period to continue until three years after the committed sentence.
