Woman charged with robbery after alleged assault with cast in Utica

UTICA — A 22-year-old woman was charged with robbery after allegedly striking a victim with a cast during a theft at an apartment on Genesee Street.

Utica Police units were dispatched to the 1400 block of Genesee Street at approximately 12:50 p.m. July 29 regarding a neighbor dispute.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with a female who stated that when she arrived home, she was informed that a woman she knew was inside her apartment attempting to steal clothing.

When the victim confronted the woman, the suspect began striking her in the head with a cast she was wearing, according to police.

When the victim fell to the ground, the suspect began kicking her in the stomach and fled with a bag of clothes, police said.

Officers were provided a description of the suspect and located her a short distance away while conducting an area canvas.

The woman was still in possession of the stolen property when detained, police said.

After positive identification, the suspect was transported to the Utica Police Department.

Fatima Bowens, 22, of Utica, was charged with robbery in the third degree and harassment in the second degree.
