WALTHAM — A 36-year-old Waltham man was arrested on multiple drug trafficking charges after police stopped him for reckless operation of an electric scooter on Main Street.
Joseph Keane was pulled over at 6:15 p.m. July 26 in front of 577 Main Street after an officer observed him riding at high speed without a helmet and continuing onto the sidewalk near pedestrians, according to a Waltham Police Department press release issued July 30.
Police discovered Keane’s license was suspended and began placing him under arrest for charges related to negligent operation of the scooter.
During the arrest, officers found Keane carrying a knife, brass knuckles and an expandable metal baton.
A search of Keane and his backpack revealed several hundred orange pills weighing over 115 grams suspected to be methamphetamine, over 200 suspected Xanax pills, numerous baggies of suspected cocaine and ketamine, and more than 50 pills each of suspected clonazepam and gabapentin.
Police also seized $67,961.57 in cash that is subject to forfeiture proceedings.
Keane was charged with trafficking in methamphetamine, multiple counts of possession with intent to distribute controlled substances, carrying a dangerous weapon, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, disorderly conduct and scooter violations.
On July 28, detectives executed a search warrant at Keane’s room at the Extended Stay hotel on Fourth Avenue, where they found additional narcotics including over 14 grams of suspected methamphetamine, Xanax pills, marijuana products and suspected psilocybin mushrooms.
Keane faces additional drug distribution charges related to the hotel room search.
