LAKEWOOD — The Lakewood-Busti Police Department arrested a Rochester man Tuesday after he allegedly used another person to attempt cashing a stolen check at a local bank.

Police were dispatched to the Lakewood M&T Bank branch July 29 for a report of a subject claiming he was being used in a fraudulent check scheme.

Officers interviewed the subject inside the bank and determined he was being used in an attempt to cash a stolen check from Amherst, New York.

The subject provided a description of the person who gave him the check and the vehicle that person was operating.

Police located the vehicle a short distance away and conducted a traffic stop.

Naeqwan J. Williams, 26, of Rochester, allegedly provided the victim with a forged stolen check from Amherst and wanted the victim to cash it in exchange for a small amount of money.

During a search of Williams’ vehicle, officers found another stolen check from Buffalo.

Williams was charged with two counts of criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree, one count of possession of a forged instrument in the second degree, and multiple traffic citations for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.

Williams was transported to the Lakewood-Busti Police Department for processing and released with an appearance ticket due to New York state bail reform.
