HORSEHEADS — New York State Police arrested a 47-year-old Corning man July 25 for grand larceny following a reported theft at Walmart.
Peter E. McCarthy was charged with Grand Larceny in the 4th Degree, an E felony, after allegedly stealing merchandise valued at $2,142.88 from the Walmart at 1400 County Route 64.
At approximately 4 p.m., state police were dispatched to the store after asset protection staff observed a male suspect exit with two full shopping carts of unpaid merchandise.
The suspect was seen walking toward a nearby Starbucks on County Route 64.
Troopers located McCarthy and transported him back to Walmart, where he was positively identified by asset protection staff.
McCarthy was then transported to SP Horseheads for processing.
Investigation revealed McCarthy had an active Superior Court warrant out of SP Horseheads and an additional warrant from the Elmira City Police Department.
Due to McCarthy’s prior felony convictions and outstanding warrants, he was arraigned in Town of Horseheads Court before Judge Banfield and remanded to the Chemung County Jail without bail.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 13 at 9 a.m.
