Albany police arrest teen with modified handgun after foot chase

ALBANY — An 18-year-old Albany man was arrested Thursday evening after police found him in possession of a loaded handgun modified with a switch.

Albany Police Officers responded to the rear yard of a residence on Thornton Avenue near Livingston Avenue around 6:35 p.m. July 24 for reports of a person with a weapon.

Upon arrival, as officers approached the rear yard, two individuals fled on foot, resulting in a foot pursuit.

Ambishas Cowan was taken into custody on Wilkins Avenue and found to be in possession of the loaded modified handgun.

Cowan has been charged with two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd and one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd.

He was arraigned Friday morning in Albany City Criminal Court and remanded to the Albany County Jail with bail set at $100,000.

A subsequent search of the area resulted in the recovery of another handgun.
