FAIR HAVEN — Police arrested a 48-year-old Rutland man Tuesday after he assaulted an officer and damaged a local market.

Spencer R. Beckwith was charged with assault of a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, unlawful mischief and disorderly conduct.

Police responded to Liberty Street at 9:10 a.m. for a report of a suspicious person.

Upon arrival, officers learned Beckwith had been looking in cars on Liberty Street.

A short time later, police heard yelling and saw Beckwith in front of Liberty Street Market.

When a patrol officer pulled up and attempted to talk with Beckwith, he immediately grabbed the officer, leading to a struggle.

Police were able to take Beckwith into custody but the officer sustained minor injuries.

Through investigation, police learned Beckwith was causing problems inside the market and was asked to leave.

Beckwith then damaged the front door of the store upon leaving by slamming it closed and punching it.

While being processed at the police station, Beckwith spit on numerous police officers.

Beckwith was transported to Rutland District Court where he was turned over to the Sheriff’s Department for arraignment.
