TROY — A 26-year-old man was arrested after firing an air rifle at a marked Troy Police patrol vehicle from a second-floor window Tuesday morning.
Zachary J. Charney-Schatz was charged with attempted assault in the first degree, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and criminal mischief in the third degree.
The incident occurred around 6:45 a.m. in the area of 5th Avenue and 103rd Street while patrol officers were assisting a construction crew with roadwork.
Officers were using sirens and public announcement speakers to alert residents to move illegally parked vehicles from areas posted with no parking signs to avoid towing.
Charney-Schatz, upset with the officers’ actions, leaned from a second-floor window at a residence on 5th Avenue and shot an air-powered pellet rifle at the marked patrol vehicle being driven by an officer.
The projectile damaged a door panel of the police vehicle.
Officers established a perimeter and equipped additional protective equipment while attempting to communicate with the suspect.
Troy Police Department’s Emergency Response Team, assisted by Colonie Police Department’s Special Services Team, responded to the scene along with Troy Police Department’s Crisis Negotiations Team.
Negotiators established contact with Charney-Schatz and he voluntarily exited the residence around 8:30 a.m.
A court-ordered search warrant was executed at the scene and the air-powered pellet rifle was located in the kitchen area.
An uninvolved BB pistol was also collected from the scene.
Charney-Schatz was scheduled to be arraigned in Troy City Court.
No injuries were sustained during the incident.
