SPRINGFIELD — Springfield Police officers arrested an 18-year-old man with a fully automatic ghost gun Saturday night following a carjacking and crash into two homes on Eastern Avenue.
Officers received a report of an armed carjacking at 8:05 p.m. near the intersection of Elliot Street and Salem Street, where a victim allegedly had his vehicle stolen at gunpoint.
At approximately 11:30 p.m., officers responded to the 200 block of Eastern Avenue for a report of a vehicle that crashed into two homes.
The crash damaged a fence, front deck and front stairs of one home and a deck of a second home, leaving the car inoperable.
Bystanders assisted the suspected driver from the vehicle before officers arrived.
Police discovered the crashed vehicle was the same one stolen during the earlier carjacking.
Officers recovered a large capacity ghost gun with a sear-selector switch inside the car, making the firearm a fully automatic machine gun.
The suspect, identified as Malachi Williams of Springfield, was arrested at approximately 11:45 p.m. and transported to Baystate Medical Center for treatment of injuries suffered during the crash.
Williams faces multiple charges including receiving a stolen motor vehicle, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of a property damage crash, carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, making a firearm without a serial number, possession of a large capacity firearm during the commission of a felony, improper storage of a large capacity firearm near a minor, possession of a machine gun, possession of a loaded machine gun, armed and masked robbery, firearm-armed carjacking, reckless operation of a motor vehicle and number plate violation to conceal identification.
