SPRINGFIELD — Springfield police officers arrested a 25-year-old suspect and recovered a stolen dirt bike Friday during an anti-off-highway-vehicle detail.

Officers under the direction of Sergeant William Catellier arrested Shyloe Harris of West Springfield around 6:35 p.m. after observing reckless driving in the area of Main Street and Belmont Avenue.

Police were conducting the detail to deter illegal riding of dirt bikes and other off-highway vehicles, which are prohibited on city streets and have led to serious injuries and deaths.

Officers observed Harris passing several vehicles and running a red light at high speeds.

When officers attempted a traffic stop in the area of White Street and Belmont Avenue, Harris drove into East Longmeadow.

Springfield police did not follow the rider out of the city.

Harris returned to Springfield and crashed on Hiawatha Street.

Harris fell off the bike and attempted to flee on foot.

Officers found Harris hiding in a garage on Whittier Street.

K9 Officer Jacob Boudreau and K9 Taz located several clothing items that Harris attempted to discard after the crash.

The dirt bike was reported stolen from Sunderland.

Harris is charged with failure to stop for police, unregistered motor vehicle, uninsured motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of a property damage crash and receiving a stolen motor vehicle.
