Phone scam targets Cattaraugus County residents with fake traffic ticket texts

CATTARAUGUS COUNTY — The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a new text message scam targeting community members with fake traffic ticket notices.

The fraudulent text messages claim to be final notices for outstanding traffic tickets and threaten suspension of driving privileges and vehicle registration.

Sheriff’s officials say the messages are generalized and sent randomly in an attempt to trick people into entering payment information on fraudulent websites.

The Cattaraugus County Department of Motor Vehicles has confirmed the fraudulent activity.

Authorities are advising residents not to respond to these messages or enter any personal information if they receive them.
