CONCORD — One person died following a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 89 southbound Sunday afternoon.
State troopers assigned to the Troop D barracks responded to the crash report on July 13.
When troopers arrived with members of the Concord Fire Department, they found an orange 1979 Volkswagen Bus and a white 2023 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van had been involved in the crash.
First responders found one driver with life-threatening injuries.
Fire and EMS personnel worked to free the injured driver and performed life-saving measures.
The driver of the Volkswagen, Curtis Avery, 69, of Loudon, was transported to an area hospital and pronounced dead due to injuries suffered in the crash.
The driver of the Mercedes-Benz was taken to the hospital for a precautionary evaluation.
The roadside investigation determined that as traffic slowed and eventually stopped due to congestion, Avery struck the rear of the Mercedes-Benz, causing extensive and heavy front-end damage to the Volkswagen.
I-89 southbound was closed for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by members of the New Hampshire Department of Transportation.
