WEBSTER — A Webster police officer disarmed a woman who attempted to stab him with a butcher knife during a mental health emergency call Monday afternoon.
Officers Thomas Motyka and Nicholas Caruso, along with Webster EMS, responded to an apartment at approximately 3:24 p.m. after an emergency mental health agency reported a woman had threatened to harm herself and was destroying her apartment.
The woman appeared intoxicated when officers and medics arrived and spoke with her.
Officials decided she should be transported to the hospital under a Section 12, which is a temporary involuntary application for hospitalization.
The woman refused to be transported and continued destroying items in the apartment while drinking more alcohol.
Officer Motyka, a certified Crisis Intervention Officer, approached the woman to de-escalate the situation so paramedics could safely evaluate her.
As Motyka approached, the woman suddenly grabbed a large butcher knife from a counter and made a motion as if she was going to stab the officer.
Motyka grabbed the woman’s arm and pried the knife away before placing her in handcuffs.
The woman was transported to the hospital under a Section 12 and will face charges of assault with a dangerous weapon at a later date.
