OLEAN — A 2-year-old child was hospitalized after ingesting part of a marijuana edible while unsupervised at a residence in the north end of the city on June 26.
Olean City Fire and Police responded to the residence after receiving reports of a possible child overdose.
The child was found in distress and taken to Olean General Hospital, where medical staff determined the child had consumed part of a marijuana edible labeled “death bar.”
The child was then transported to Oishei Hospital in Buffalo for further treatment.
The child eventually recovered and was released from the hospital.
The incident was investigated by the Criminal Unit and Juvenile Unit of the Olean Police Department.
A parent was arrested and charged with acting in a manner injurious to a child under 17, a misdemeanor.
Cattaraugus County Child Protective Services also investigated the incident.
Police advised residents to keep edibles locked up in their homes, noting that most edibles appear to children as candy.
