Police sergeant crashes cruiser on I-89 in Berlin

BERLIN — A Vermont State Police sergeant crashed his cruiser after hydroplaning on Interstate 89 North early Monday morning.

Sgt. Benjamin Katz, 45, of Burlington, failed to maintain his lane of travel when his 2017 Ford Explorer hydroplaned during heavy rain at approximately 3:28 a.m.

The single-vehicle crash occurred near mile marker 47.8 on the wet interstate.

Katz was actively working in the line of duty at the time of the crash.

The department-issued vehicle sustained significant front-end damage.

Katz sustained suspected minor injuries and was taken to the University of Vermont Medical Center.

Road conditions were wet and it was raining at the time of the crash.
