WATERBURY — Major Crimes Detectives have made an arrest in connection with an ongoing murder investigation stemming from an incident that occurred on Saturday, June 28, at approximately 9:35 p.m., in the area of 69 Washington Street.

Officers responded to the scene for a report of a male stabbing victim.

Responding officers located Samuel Lopez, 47, of Waterbury, outside with multiple stab wounds.

He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

A second adult male was also found at the scene with a serious facial laceration.

He was treated at a local hospital and has since been released.

Following an investigation, detectives identified Jose Ayala, 50, of Waterbury, as the suspect.

Investigators believe Ayala and both victims were known to each other and that a personal dispute led to the incident.

An arrest warrant was obtained charging Ayala with Murder and Assault in the First Degree.

On July 7, Ayala voluntarily turned himself in at Waterbury Police Department Headquarters.

He was taken into custody without incident and is scheduled to be arraigned today at Waterbury Superior Court.
