LEICESTER — A carjacking suspect intentionally rammed a police cruiser during a pursuit that stretched across multiple central Massachusetts communities Sunday evening.
The incident began when a suspect took a vehicle without permission from a Clinton residence, striking multiple people and causing property damage.
The suspect cut off his probation-ordered GPS monitoring device around the time of the first incident.
Later that day, the same suspect carjacked a woman at a Dairy Queen in West Boylston, telling her he had a firearm and threatening to shoot her before fleeing in her stolen vehicle.
At approximately 7:45 p.m., Leicester Police were notified that Worcester Police were pursuing the carjacking suspect in the stolen vehicle as it entered Leicester on Route 9.
Leicester Police Sergeant Matthew Brady spotted the vehicle on Main Street near Waite Street and took over the pursuit.
Detective Travis McCauley and Officer Ives Fisher joined the chase moments later.
The suspect traveled down Pleasant Street and eventually onto Hartwell Road in Oxford.
The vehicle then turned around on someone’s front lawn, accelerated and intentionally rammed Sgt. Brady’s cruiser on the driver’s side as he was attempting to exit, trapping him inside.
Detective McCauley and Officer Fisher immediately took the occupants into custody for the West Boylston Police Department.
Leicester K-9 Handler Matthew Fenuccio and K-9 Cooney responded to the area in case the occupants fled on foot.
Officers from Worcester, West Boylston, Oxford and the Massachusetts State Police arrived on scene to assist.
The vehicle’s operator was turned over to the West Boylston Police Department and arraigned Monday in Clinton District Court.
The suspect will be summoned to East Brookfield District and Dudley District Courts at a later time for numerous additional offenses committed in Leicester and Oxford.
