SPRINGFIELD — Members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit and Hampden County Sheriff’s Department arrested two suspects Friday and seized a loaded illegal firearm and more than 300 grams of cocaine.
FIU detectives had been investigating two individuals for possessing an illegal firearm and distributing crack-cocaine in the area of Federal and Worthington streets.
Around 11:50 a.m. Friday, detectives and sheriff’s deputies attempted to detain the suspects, Keven Velazquez and Luis Rivera, on Summit Street.
Rivera tried to run away but was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit.
Velazquez also attempted to run away but was arrested after a short foot pursuit.
Detectives recovered approximately 322 grams of crack-cocaine from Rivera.
Detectives also recovered an illegal firearm loaded with 17 rounds of ammunition and approximately 37 pills of Clonazepam from Velazquez.
Keven Velazquez, 26, of Springfield is charged with carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded large capacity firearm on a public way, improper storage of a large capacity firearm, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, cocaine trafficking of more than 200 grams, conspiracy to violate drug law, possession with the intent to distribute a Class E drug and resisting arrest.
Luis Rivera, 20, of Springfield is charged with cocaine trafficking of more than 200 grams, conspiracy to violate drug law and resisting arrest.
