Holyoke woman suffers serious injuries in dog attack

HOLYOKE — A woman suffered serious injuries after being attacked by a German shepherd on Sargeant Street on July 6.

Holyoke Police Chief Brian Keenan announced that officers responded to the attack around 12:15 p.m.

Officer Steven Negron located the adult female victim and began providing medical assistance.

Officers Thomas Spafford and Joel Mateo arrived and assisted with treating the victim’s serious injuries.

The victim told police the German shepherd attacked her unprovoked.

The victim was able to escape from the dog to safety.

The dog’s owner grabbed the animal and took it inside.

The owner believes the dog was able to get out of the yard through an open gate.

An animal control officer from Thomas J. O’Connor arrived and classified the attack as a “Level 5” attack, which is one step below a dog attack that results in death.

The dog must remain on 10-day quarantine.

The incident remains under investigation by the Holyoke Police Department and Animal Control Officers.
