5 suspects charged after stolen car crashes in Holyoke

HOLYOKE — Five suspects were arrested Saturday after a stolen vehicle crashed in West Springfield following a police chase that began in Holyoke.

Holyoke Police Chief Brian Keenan announced that three juveniles were arrested and two adults will be charged in connection with the incident.

Around 2:30 p.m. July 5, Holyoke Police Sgt. Dustin Summers observed a known stolen vehicle with five occupants in the area of Westfield Road and Whitings Farm Road.

The driver entered the parking lot of the Holyoke Mall and Sgt. Summers attempted to conduct a traffic stop.

The driver accelerated and crashed through two wooden barriers in a construction zone.

The driver then entered I-91 South and attempted to exit at 10B.

The driver collided with another vehicle, which led to a third uninvolved vehicle being struck.

All five occupants of the stolen car fled on foot into the woods.

Sgt. Summers checked on the occupants of the other vehicles and began searching for the suspects.

Holyoke Police Officers Johnathan Ortiz, Giovanni Abella, Thomas Spafford, Joel Mateo and Steven Negron arrived to assist, along with West Springfield Police Officers, Massachusetts State Police Troopers and the State Police Air Wing.

West Springfield Police located two suspects on Morgan Road: an 18-year-old Chicopee man and a 17-year-old male from Holyoke.

The 17-year-old was arrested on a warrant.

The 18-year-old was transported to Baystate to evaluate injuries from the crash and will receive a criminal complaint for receiving a stolen motor vehicle.

West Springfield Police also located a 15-year-old female from Springfield on Apple Ridge Road, and she was placed under arrest.

West Springfield Police located a 14-year-old female from Pittsfield and a 24-year-old female from Springfield on Apple Ridge Road.

The 14-year-old female was arrested.

The 24-year-old was transported to Baystate to evaluate injuries from the crash and will receive a criminal complaint for receiving a stolen motor vehicle.

The juveniles refused medical attention.

Further investigation showed that the 17-year-old from Holyoke was the alleged driver.

Due to their ages, the names of the juveniles arrested will not be released.
