Gorham police warn residents of contractor overpayment scam

1 min read

GORHAM — The Gorham Police Department is warning residents about a scam involving individuals posing as legitimate vendors requesting estimates for contract work.

According to police, the scammers send checks for amounts greater than the quoted cost after receiving estimates.

The fraudsters then instruct recipients to deposit the full check and forward the excess funds to a supposed “delivery company” or another party allegedly involved in the project.

Police say both the check and the third parties are fraudulent.

Banks may initially make the funds available within a couple of days, but the check will eventually bounce, according to authorities.

When the check bounces, the recipient is responsible for reimbursing the bank for any money that was withdrawn or forwarded.

Police are asking residents to remain cautious and contact the Gorham Police Department if they encounter or suspect a scam of this nature.
