RYE — A 19-year-old White Plains man faces multiple charges after crashing his vehicle in Rye with six passengers inside.
On July 4, the City of Rye Police Department responded to a one-car rollover accident on the Boston Post Road at the intersection of Bradford Avenue.
When officers arrived, they found the driver, Jamal Abdul Razak, 19, of White Plains, and multiple passengers, ages 18-19 years old, outside the vehicle.
The passengers reported only minor injuries and all were transported by EMS to the Westchester County Medical Center for treatment.
An investigation revealed that the crashed vehicle was traveling north on the Boston Post Road when, according to Razak, he was attempting to avoid an animal in the roadway and struck the curb, causing him to over correct and flip his vehicle.
The vehicle, a 2010 Acura MDX, came to a stop on its roof in the southbound lane of the Boston Post Road.
Officers said Razak displayed signs of impairment and failed the Standard Field Sobriety Testing.
At headquarters, Razak refused to submit to a chemical breath test.
Razak was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment in the second degree, a Class A misdemeanor, and driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor.
Vehicle and Traffic Law summonses were issued for operating in violation of restrictions for corrective lenses, refusal to submit to a breath test, speed not reasonable and prudent, open container of alcohol, and failing to use designated lane.
Razak was processed and released with a desk appearance ticket returnable to Rye Court on July 15 at 9 a.m.
