North Haven police end 6-hour standoff with armed suspect

NORTH HAVEN — Police ended a nearly six-hour standoff with an armed suspect who had threatened to kill officers and harm himself.

The North Haven Police Department received a call at approximately 3 p.m. from an individual who was angry about a recent arrest.

The caller made threats to kill police, harm himself and force a suicide by cop situation, according to police.

Officers responded to the upper 100 block of Montowese Avenue and determined another person was also in the home.

Police established a perimeter around the house and removed the uninvolved person from the residence.

After containing the sole occupant to the house, negotiators worked to convince the suspect to peacefully surrender.

The suspect, who was armed with multiple large knives, agreed to surrender and exited the home following commands from officers.

The suspect has been charged with interfering with police and threatening.

The individual was transported to an area hospital for evaluation.

No injuries occurred to the suspect or officers during the incident.

North Branford, Branford and East Haven police departments provided assistance throughout the incident.
