Two arrested after multi-county pursuit in upstate New York

NORWICH — A Town of Cooperstown man and a Town of Oxford woman were arrested June 26 by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office following a vehicle pursuit that spanned multiple townships and counties.

The pursuit began June 21 at approximately 1:35 a.m. when deputies attempted a traffic stop in the Town of Norwich.

The suspect vehicle fled, with the driver operating erratically and the passenger throwing objects at a marked patrol car, causing several thousand dollars in damage.

The chase ended in the Village of Ilion in Herkimer County at approximately 2:34 a.m. after the suspect vehicle intentionally struck a uniformed deputy, causing visible injuries, before fleeing.

Joseph L. Amaro, 32, of Cooperstown, and Cricket L. Miller, 43, of Oxford, were arrested June 26.

Amaro faces 19 Penal Law charges and 74 Vehicle and Traffic Law citations.

Miller faces eight Penal Law charges and eight Vehicle and Traffic Law citations.

Both were linked to a separate pursuit June 19, and additional charges are expected.

Miller also had outstanding warrants at the time of her arrest.

Amaro and Miller were remanded to custody after arraignment.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office thanked New York State Police, Ilion Police Department, and Ilion EMS for their assistance.

All charges are allegations, and the suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
