Scarborough man charged in fatal hit-and-run crash

SCARBOROUGH — A 67-year-old man has been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a bicyclist last week.

Saran Sun was charged July 2 with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident involving injury or death, a class C felony, according to the Scarborough Police Department.

The crash occurred June 27 at approximately 4:15 a.m. in the area of Southgate Road on U.S. Route 1.

Howard Gribbin, 50, was riding a bicycle when he was struck by a motor vehicle whose operator fled the scene.

Gribbin was transported to Maine Medical Center where he died from his injuries.

Route 1 between Haigis Parkway and Payne Road was shut down for approximately three hours while officers investigated the scene.

Police identified a suspect vehicle July 1.

The vehicle was located at approximately 4:21 a.m. July 2, and Sun was identified as the operator of the vehicle on the morning of the accident.

The incident remains under investigation.
